Description

The children’s ministry director is responsible for leading the children’s ministries of Stanley Park Baptist Church. In constant reliance on Jesus Christ, he or she provides this leadership by modelling a life of Christian discipleship, loving and praying for the children under his or her care, setting a God-honouring direction and plan for these ministries, recruiting, training, and overseeing the volunteers who serve in them, and serving alongside them as one who leads from the front lines.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Has a clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and a vital, personal, and growing relationship with Him
  • Has a calling and passion for children’s ministry; is teachable and approachable
  • Has strong communication and administration skills
  • Is a disciple-making leader and has a strong desire to see people meet with God through public worship
  • Agrees with our church statement/s of faith and conduct
  • Formal theological training is preferred, but not a necessity

Role and Responsibilities

  • Exercises oversight over and takes responsibility for every aspect of the church’s ministries to children from birth to grade 6, with a primary focus on Sunday morning ministries (i.e. nursery, junior Bible Town, senior Bible Town), and a secondary focus on occasional special events and initiatives as may be determined from time to time (e.g. Christmas presentations, Family Fun Nights);
  • Selects and evaluates appropriate curriculum and materials for use by these ministries;
  • Recruits and trains volunteers with the requisite character and skill to serve in these ministries, and provides them with guidance, encouragement, correction, and further training as required;
  • Ensures that all children’s ministries are adequately staffed and prepared for Sunday mornings and other events/initiatives as required;
  • Acts as necessary to maintain the integrity of the ministries and the safety and care of the children, including by ensuring that all volunteers have the required police checks before working with children.
  • Prays regularly for the children, their parents, and the volunteers;
  • Works to ensure that all children participating in the church’s ministries are loved and welcomed, are winsomely presented with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and have appealing opportunities to grow in their knowledge and practice of the faith as appropriate to their age and level of spiritual development;
  • Respects and cooperates with the God-given role of parents as the primary educators and guardians of their children, with ultimate responsibility and authority under God for their instruction and spiritual care;
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with parents and the church as a whole about what is happening in the children’s ministries, and maintains the children’s ministry bulletin boards;
  • Takes a hands-on role working directly with children in the various Sunday morning ministries, typically 2 out of every 4 Sundays;
  • Participates as much as possible in the regular worship of the church on the Sundays when he or she is not working directly with the children;
  • Is present and available on all Sunday mornings (except for vacation time as previously arranged with the senior pastor) to provide supervision and help for set-up and wrap-up, speak with parents, and generally ensure the ministries run smoothly;
  • Personally leads other special children’s events or initiatives as required, or delegates leadership of such events/initiatives in consultation with the Senior Pastor;
  • Exercises primary responsibility for the church’s safety policies, acting as the church’s contact person for the policy, maintaining the required records, chairing a committee for the implementation and updating of the policy, proposing updates as needed, providing or arranging for training related to the policy, and ensuring policy is followed in the church’s children’s ministries.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience leading and managing teams from a servant leadership perspective
  • Computer skills/ experience with Planning Center is an asset
