The Gift and Challenge of Advent in Ministry

By Kylie Hurlburt, Interim Youth & Young Adult Ministry Lead, Kingsway Baptist Church

Advent season brings a mix of emotions, from the joy and excitement of Christmas to the chaos of planning and wrapping up the year. When I first started at Kingsway, I had no idea what I was signing up for. Growing up in church, I knew there was always a Christmas play and the candlelight service on Christmas Eve. Now, being on the other side with the meetings, organizing, and planning, this beautiful Christmas tradition has turned into one of the most stressful times of the year.

Getting families on board, managing the time commitment of participants, and balancing the expectations of the congregation and leadership leaves me feeling overwhelmed and stretched thin.

All that being said, the work is worth it! I have the opportunity to see my youth engage with the greater church community, serve in many different ways, and participate in multigenerational ministry.

Advent is a time of coming together and a reminder of the reason for the season. In a commercialized world, being reminded each Sunday leading up to Christmas of Jesus coming to earth offers a meaningful opportunity to engage with the next generation. Though the pressure to make things perfect can be intense, Advent reminds us why we celebrate and what our focus should be: remembering the love and gift of Christ given to all.
