The official job description describes the senior minister as “having oversight and leadership of all interests of the church and all the departments of its work” and acting “in an advisory capacity on all boards and committees” with the following five functions:

  1. a shepherd to provide pastoral care
  2. a worship leader/preacher
  3. a teacher
  4. an administrator
  5. an evangelist

Overview of Church and Community

First Baptist Amherst, located in the centre of the Maritime provinces, is theologically diverse and open, expecting progressive, thoughtful leadership and a traditional worship experience led by the Senior Minister.

The congregation has participated for decades in joint summer services with the local United Church.

The congregation has hosted a community youth ministry as part of the responsibility of the Minister of Christian Education.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

M.Div. or equivalent,. ordained, and can be recognized for pastoral ministry by the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada or Canadian Association for Baptist Freedoms. 

Role and Responsibilities

  • worship leader
  • spiritual and personal counsellor
  • director of a church staff of five and participant with the lay leadership of the primary boards
  • leadership within inter-church activities and community ministries
