Queen Street Baptist Church is seeking a pastor who is warm and invitational, a “people person” who is able to help others feel safe and included. They will be comfortable stepping back and placing the focus on Christ instead of themselves.

Overview of Church and Community

Queen Street Baptist Church (QSBC) is located in St. Catharines Ontario where it has provided a witness for Christ since 1833. St. Catharines is a city of approximately 135,000 people located in the heart of the beautiful Niagara region. Located on the south shore of Lake Ontario, St. Catharines is called the Garden City in large measure because of its many tree-lined streets. The Niagara region is renowned for its vineyards, orchards, the Niagara Escarpment and the world-famous Niagara Falls. One can enjoy hiking, cycling, golfing, fine dining, and attending theatre and sporting events. Niagara is home to Brock University and Niagara College.

The current church building was completed in 1891. Its sanctuary is highlighted by beautiful stained-glass windows and a Casavant pipe organ. A Trillium grant recently provided funding to renovate the Community Room and lower hallway to enhance ministry opportunities. The church currently has approximately 100 members, some non-resident, the majority of whom are 50 years of age and older.

The following are key components that characterize the nature of the church:

  • Fellowship: The congregants are friendly and caring. They form social bonds and deep friendships and meet outside church activities. There is a real concern and loving support shown to those in need. We have been in the past and are now a “church family”.
  • Spiritual Growth: The church has a rich spiritual tradition of belief in prayer, Bible study and a commitment to growing in relationship with Christ.
  • Outreach: Within the community the church has always had a positive influence. For example, beginning in 1995 QSBC was the first church in the city to operate an Out of the Cold night for the homeless. This project went on to become a city-wide network of churches offering relief to the homeless and continues today. The church also supports Christian Horizons and addiction support services.
  • Missions: QSBC is an active supporter of CBOQ missions. In the last few years we have concentrated our weekly missions offerings on targeted projects each quarter. We welcome refugees and new Canadian immigrants. We are a truly multicultural and multiracial congregation.

QSBC is currently in a period of transition. There are many areas of untapped potential for future ministry growth given our downtown location, including:

  • People without housing: Prior to the pandemic, QSBC hosted a Saturday evening service and served a sit-down meal. The church currently provides a take out meal one evening a week.
  • International arrivals/newcomers: Prior to the pandemic, QSBC hosted an English Conversation Club to help folks new to Canada practice their English language skills.
  • Post-secondary students: QSBC has partnered financially and in prayer with on-campus ministries such as Brock Christian Fellowship in the past. Brock University has residence buildings downtown in close proximity to the church.
  • Downtown area/business community: Though located downtown, QSBC has a very limited community presence Monday through Saturday. Throughout the week, the downtown is characterized by business people and those visiting the area for shopping, services, or events (Performing Arts Centre, Meridian Centre, Montebello Park, Market Square, etc.)
  • Nearby new housing developments: New apartments built within a walkable distance from the church have seen an influx of people living in the area.
