Description

This is a senior leadership role that requires a mature faith in Jesus Christ, deep passion for people and strong leadership skills. As the Senior Pastor, you will work in collaboration with the pastoral and lay leadership teams to oversee all ministries of SCBC. Along with senior church leaders, you will be the public face of SCBC, representing the church in communal and ecclesiastical functions. You must be a man of God, devoted to His word and prayer.

Overview of Church and Community

We are a church that is centered upon Christ and based on the Holy Scripture, striving to build up disciples of Jesus into a community of God that is diverse in composition, yet united in purpose. We desire our ministry to be flexible, adaptive and relevant to the need of a fast-changing society, serving a congregation that is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, for enduring impact on individuals, our city and the world.
We have 3 congregational groups (English-speaking, Cantonese-speaking, Mandarin-speaking) within our church family. Each of these groups has a dedicated ministry team, with each team overseeing the 4 ministry areas as outlined below:
-Worship-
SCBC as a local church is to manifest the nature of the universal Church,
for believers to live out a life of worship of the triune God both as the “church gathered” and as the “church scattered”,
this being man’s chief end, to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
-Nurture-
SCBC as a local church is to facilitate on-going Christian learning for spiritual maturity, and the exploration and deployment of gifts in ministry, through a conducive environment.
-Body-life-
SCBC as a local church will promote true fellowship in the body of Christ,
through welcoming, caring, socializing, supporting, and building up the people that come to the church,
by collaborative teamwork within the ministry, and with other ministry areas in the church.
-Outreach-
SCBC as a local church is to reach out locally and globally, to manifest Christ’s love and justice through the proclamation of the Gospel and good deeds,
1. to lead people to Christ through evangelism (Matthew 28:19-20)
2. to demonstrate God’s love through serving others (Matthew 22:37-40)
3. to serve as the conscience of the society and speak forth according to the Word of God.
-Administration & Service-
Goal of this ministry is to support the four-fold functions of SCBC in manifestation of the nature of the universal Church. To fulfill its stewardship responsibility, this Board takes the role in management and administration of the church, in financial matters, human resources, assets, and operations, as well as providing facility support to all ministry areas.
SCBC was founded in 1985 as a sister church and a suburban plant of Toronto Chinese Baptist Church. We are an active member of the Canadian Baptist Ministries through the affiliation of the regional body, the CBOQ (Canadian Baptist of Ontario and Quebec) with four other Unions and Conventions across the nation (see http://www.cbmin.org/cbm/who-we-are).
We are also members of The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (the Canadian equivalent of NAE. website: www.evangelicalfellowship.ca) and CCCOWE (Chinese Co-ordination Centre Of World Evangelism website: www.cccowe.org).
There are currently twelve members on the full-time pastoral team church-wide. We are searching for a senior pastor to lead and complement the existing team, consisting of the lead pastors of the 3 congregational groups and the extended pastors in charge of the four functions under each congregation.
SCBC is located in a north-eastern section of Toronto (an area formerly known as Scarborough), bordering York Region, which is one of the fastest growing municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Our congregants are not just from the local community, but come from all over the GTA; including various points within Toronto, Markham, and Richmond Hill. We are easily accessible by public transit and to those who wish to drive.
We are situated in a new custom-built facility on 13 acres of beautifully wooded land, right in the heart of a growing community. Our location (www.scbc.com) provides exciting outreach opportunities as the nearby vicinity consists of both residential and commercial/retail areas (Pacific Mall, the largest indoor Chinese mall in North America, and Mon Sheong, a well-respected long-term care facility for the elderly, are within walking distance).

Role and Responsibilities

- Relationships - with a deep passion for people, you will journey with them towards an increasingly vibrant faith and relationship with God through Jesus Christ; empowering, motivating and challenging them to serve and live out Kingdom values.
- Pastor to the Pastors – in leading the pastorate, you will walk alongside and nurture the pastoral staff team. You will strive to develop a culture and network of relationships that foster mutual care, strong team-work and a model for the congregation. You will work with the Deacon’s Board over matters of pastoral staff recruitment and development.
- Vision Casting – with complete dependence on God and building on what God is already doing through SCBC, you will work with the pastors, leaders and congregation to develop a vision for the church. With patience, love and conviction, you will work to gain understanding, consensus and ownership of this vision amongst the congregation.
- Preaching and Teaching – you not only love and live out the Word of God, but also love teaching it with creativity and conviction! SCBC has a strong teaching team, and you will complement this team with your unique God-given skills. You will have an opportunity to share the pulpit, Sunday school terms and other teaching opportunities within a team setting.
- Management and Administrative – you will also apply your management and administrative skills to ensure ministries are delivered accountably. You and the rest of the leadership shall act as facilitators for timely changes should those needs arise.
